Local Open Tournament Speed Guidelines

Local tournament are strictly Long Island UPA Events which are open locally to all amateur UPA and sometimes none UPA players.  Tournament matches are not recorded into or monitored by the UPA SSR system.   To play in the tournament all players will be assigned an Initial Tournament Speed based mostly on Official UPA Speeds for UPA players, player information, history and by comparing to other rated skill levels of local leagues and/or tournaments for non UPA players.

A general outline for non UPA players of how players are categorized are Advanced players Speed 8-10, Intermediate player Speeds 4-7, and Beginner Speeds 1-3.

Advanced players demonstrate consistency, knowledge, and solid mechanics in all parts of the game. Intermediate players have a working knowledge of the game and exhibit characteristics of advanced players with less consistency.  Beginner players struggle with basics, stance, usage of English, ball speed and placement, etc. The tables below offer some guidelines. If a player falls into multiple categories, then the player shall be assigned the higher Speed.

If the Player cannot show their established skill levels, an exception can be made if the Player is known and has other known players who can verify (vouch for) their skill levels. In this case the tournament director will determine if the Player can play at the declared Tournament Speed or perhaps at +1 or +2 their “Initial Speed” level until the player is established. If it is felt a player and/or the player who vouched, lied about their Speed, the tournament director reserves the right to disqualify, ban, or suspend the player or both players and they will forfeit all event fees and money won.

In General, the charts below are a guideline only until the Player becomes established. Player may be assigned more than the below in the effort to avoid Player competing at lower than their actual skill.
